Chapter Six

Mags yanked off her coat. The warmth from the sun’s beams felt good on her bare shoulders. She picked up the guitar case her sword was concealed in and glanced back. Upon exiting the building, Ratchet had removed his clothing down to a sleeveless undershirt and jeans. He was stuffing the shirt and suit jacket into the duffle bag he carried. She watched his biceps flex when he rose and picked up the tote, then noticed how other women stopped and stared.

Ratchet was the tallest person there. A slick sheen of sweat covered his exposed skin, and a few days’ growth covered his cheeks. He combed his hair back from his face with his fingers and moved next to her. Oblivious to the interested looks he was getting from other females, he gazed down at Mags. “Where to now, lady dragon?”

Mags watched the taxis zooming by. “I need to find my contact, a jackal who goes by the name of Yazeed.”

“Is there anyone you don’t know?” Ratchet raised his hand, and an older model sedan screeched to a stop.

“Once up on a time, it was my job to know these things.” She peered through the open passenger-side window at the driver. “We need to go to Gamet El Dowel.”

The cabbie’s brows furrowed. “Not a safe area for westerners. I take you to Maadi. Nice hotels, good area.”

Ratchet opened the back door and slid in. “You heard the lady.” He growled as Mags eased in next to him, shoving the bulky case between them.

“It’s your life.” The driver shrugged and pulled away, throwing them back against the seat. He zipped through the tight streets, squeezing through the compact spaces created by parked cars and close buildings. When a crowd crossed the street, he leaned on the horn until the road cleared. At a stoplight, he twisted in his seat. “Are you sure you want to go to Gamet? Can be very dangerous to westeners. Maadi—”

“Just get us to Gamet.” Ratchet lifted his pelvis and dug money out his pocket, holding it up. “I’ll triple your fare.”

“Where on Gamet El Dowel?” The guy’s words came out in a squeak. He cleared his throat, his eyes darting between the bills in Ratchet’s hand and Mags’s face.

“Al Nabila Cairo Hotel.” Mags hoped they could conclude their business early. The dull ache that sometimes replaced the sharp pain inched up her arm.

“Okay!” The car lifted to the side on two tires as the driver whipped the car around a corner, barely avoiding sideswiping a vehicle parked on the curb. They raced down a narrow side street. Dry air rushed through the open windows. The walls of the surrounding structures were so close she could reach out the window and scrape the old stones. Shadows gave way to bright light as the car burst out onto an open lane, cutting off other automobiles in oncoming traffic. Horns blared. They came to an abrupt stop in front of an awning-covered entrance. Palm trees flanked the sides, and the name of the hotel was painted in small black script on the side of the red door.
